The Ginger Series is inspired by many challenges I had to personally overcome as a child. Of course, these books are fiction so they are filled with some reality and some fictional flair, as well! Being an epileptic child is difficult and I realized there are not enough epileptic protagonists in the Middle Grade realm of fiction! Knowing a lot about the struggles from personal experience, I created Ginger for all those children who need to know other kids share their struggles. Epilepsy is a nearly invisible illness that affects 470,000 kids in America each day. Although it may not be evident to an outsider, to the person with epilepsy, it is everything. It is time they get a protagonist to relate with. I struggled with Epilepsy as a child and after being told I outgrew it (and after approximately 22 long, seizure-free years) my seizures have returned and the struggle is familiar but also new in many ways.
Mouse's Houses is my first book. I wrote it when my son was a toddler. My nickname as a child was "Mouse" and the lesson learned in this book is really a lesson I learned in real life.
Many of my books are inspired by people I knew or currently know, situations, observations, or just random thoughts. Pretty much anything can inspire me with a book idea. My problem lies in remembering to write my thoughts down in that very moment! If I don't write it when I think it, it goes away quickly.
